Solar energy has already created over 37 thousand jobs in Brazil in 2020, ABSOLAR informs

From January to May, the sector has added 1236.6 megawatts (MW) in installed capacity, a 27.3% growth facing what was consolidated until 2019

São Paulo, July 2020 – An exclusive assessment from the Brazilian Solar Photovoltaic Energy Association (ABSOLAR) points out that solar photovoltaic energy was responsible for the creation of over 37 thousand jobs for Brazilian people in the first five months of 2020, even with the decrease in economic activity due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to the entity, from January to May this year, the sector added up 1236.6 megawatts (MW) in installed capacity, which represent a 27.3% growth facing the track record consolidated until the end of 2019. In these five months, new private investments of R$ 6 billion were attracted to Brazil. Hence, the photovoltaic enterprises that are already operational provided an aggregated collection of over R$ 2 billion in taxes to public coffers in 2020.

In May 2020 alone, the sector created 7.2 thousand jobs, bringing R$ 1 billion in new investments and the collection of over R$ 424.5 million of taxes to the country.

In the accumulated numbers since 2012, this energy source has already surpassed the milestone of 5.7 gigawatts (GW) of total operational capacity, adding up centralized generation and the small-scale systems (distributed generation). Thanks to this, solar energy has aggregated over R$ 30 billion in investments to Brazil, creating 165 thousand new jobs in the period.

According to the ABSOLAR’s president of the Board of Administrators, Ronaldo Koloszuk, solar energy presents itself as a powerful leverage to the upturn of the economy in Brazil, as it already did in the recent past. “In Brazil, during the crises in the years 2015 and 2016, the GDP was negative 3.8% and negative 3.6%, respectively, a real economic catastrophe. Meanwhile, the solar photovoltaic sector was moving the country towards other direction: it grew over 100% per year and helped to restructure the Brazilian economy faster. Once the most acute stage of this pandemic is over, the sector will once again propel the recovery in Brazil”, he comments.

To ABSOLAR’s CEO, Rodrigo Sauaia, solar photovoltaic energy,  is strategic tool for Brazil on behalf of competitivity and sustainable development. “Besides being clean, renewable and increasingly more competitive, solar energy relieves the costs for consumers with electricity, protecting them from recurring increases in fees. And it also helps to recompose public coffers and to meet the environmental goals assumed by Brazil internationally”, Sauaia concludes.
