Since 2012, the sector has generated more than 783.7 thousand jobs and avoided the emission of 34.5 million tons of CO2 in electricity generation
São Paulo, March 2023 – Brazil surpassed a new historical mark, that of 26 gigawatts (GW) of installed power from the photovoltaic solar source, adding the large-scale plants and the systems for generating electricity on roofs, facades and small plots of land, the equivalent of 11.6% of the country's electricity matrix. The data is from the Brazilian Photovoltaic Solar Energy Association (ABSOLAR).
According to the entity, since 2012 the solar PV source has already brought to Brazil about R$ 128.5 billion in new investments, more than R$ 39.4 billion in public taxes and generated more than 783.7 thousand accumulated jobs. With this, it also avoided the emission of 34.5 million tons of CO2 in the generation of electricity.
In the view of Ronaldo Koloszuk, chairman of ABSOLAR's Board of Administration, the accelerated growth of solar PV energy is a worldwide trend. “Brazil has one of the best solar resources on the planet, which opens up an enormous possibility for the production of the cheapest green hydrogen (H2V) in the world and the development of new synergistic technologies, such as energy storage and electric vehicles”, it says.
“According to a study by consultancy Mckinsey, Brazil may have an entire new electrical matrix by 2040 destined for the production of H2V. To this end, the country should receive around US$ 200 billion in investments in the period, such as electricity generation, transmission lines, fuel manufacturing units and associated structures, including port terminals, pipelines, storage”, adds Koloszuk.
“The growth of the solar PV source strengthens the sustainability and competitiveness of the productive sectors, in addition to benefiting all Brazilian consumers, factors that are increasingly important for the national economy and for the fulfillment of the environmental commitments assumed by the Country”, adds Rodrigo Sauaia, CEO of ABSOLAR.
According to the entity's mapping, in one year solar PV energy grew by approximately 83%, jumping from 14.2 GW to 26 GW. Since July last year, the solar PV source has grown, on average, 1 GW per month (July: 16.4 GW, August: 17.5 GW, September: 18.6 GW, October: 21.1 GW, November: 22 GW, December: 23 GW, January: 24 GW, February 2023: 25 GW and March this year: 26 GW).
In the self energy generation segment, there are 18.1 GW of installed power from the solar PV source. This is equivalent to approximately R$92.1 billion in investments, R$27.4 billion in public taxes and more than 540,000 jobs accumulated since 2012, spread across the five regions of Brazil. Solar PV technology is currently used in 99.9% of all self-generation connections in the country, easily leading the segment.
Brazil has around 7.9 GW of installed power capacity in large-scale solar PV plants. Since 2012, this plants have already brought about R$ 37.0 billion in new investments to the country and more than 238.2 thousand accumulated jobs, in addition to providing a collection in public taxes that exceeds R$ 12 billion.
About ABSOLAR
Founded in 2013, the Brazilian Photovoltaic Solar Energy Association (ABSOLAR) brings together companies and professionals from the entire production chain of the photovoltaic solar sector operating in Brazil including both, distributed and centralized Generation, and other clean technologies, including electric energy storage and green hydrogen. With national and international members of all sizes, the entity is a source of information and articulation in favor of the sustainable energy transition in Brazil.
