Solar PV is the fastest growing sector in terms of job creation with 5 million people working in solar worldwide - the most out of any renewable energy technology.

But with demand set to skyrocket in both mature and new markets, the solar industry needs to attract new talent to install nearly 25 billion new solar panels on roofs, land, and water by 2030.

To fill this skills gap, there is a pressing need for a standardised global training framework covering technicians working in solar PV construction, installation, service and maintenance.

Establishing a training standard at the global level is essential due to the inherently global nature of the solar sector. A global initiative for the harmonization and consistency in skills will be critical to enable workforce mobility and efficiency, foster innovation, promote a just transition, and ensure safety, professionalism, and high performance across the industry.

GSC’s work on Skills

The Global Solar Council has launched the Solar Training Standard Initiative (STSI) in partnership with the Global Wind Organization (GWO). This initiative aims to establish training standards for the global industry, to enhance workforce efficiency, ensure safe solar deployment and the unification of the industry through universal and transferable skills.
